Should you be using a skin toner

Is it necessary to use toner? Will toner over dry skin on my face?

As more and more beauty products hit the market, promising all sorts of acne-curing and wrinkle-ridding powers, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest and greatest. But there’s also one product that’s been around for-freaking-ever that’s starting to make a comeback: toner.

You probably remember rubbing a super astringent on your face as a teen, but are they worth trying again now? Plus, what they heck do they actually do

     What Is Toner?
Generally speaking, toner is a water-based liquid with a consistency like vinegar that contains active ingredients to help address specific issues. “Not only does it remove debris like oil and traces of makeup, but it soothes, repairs, and smooths the skin’s surface—diminishing blemishes and minimizing signs of redness and inflammation,” says Schlessinger. Bonus: It also helps prep your skin for anti-aging treatments and serums.
Is It Right for Every Skin Type?
Since the product itself is meant to absorb and control all of the dirt and oil clogged deeply into our pores, toner is only necessary for those with greasy or acne-prone skin, right? Wrong. “Today’s toners are high quality and made with many of the same ingredients you might find in your other skin-care products,” says Schlessinger. “Some of the best toners for acne-prone skin contain exfoliating ingredients like amino fruit acids or glycolic acid, while toners made for sensitive skin types are made with soothing thermal spring water.”
Regardless of your skin type,  its recommends using an alcohol-free formula, since alcohol can majorly dry out your complexion.  here a recommendation
    How Do You Apply It?
After cleansing your skin, pour two to three drops onto a cotton pad—this works best because it doesn’t absorb too much of the liquid and easily transfers product to your face. “Make sure you get enough product on the cotton pad so that it feels damp but not too wet so that you’re wasting the liquid,” says Schlessinger. Smooth a small amount across your face, neck, and d├ęcolletage, adding enough pressure to reach deep into your pores but not too much force so as to pull at the skin.
How Often Should You Use One?
While it’s true that overuse of toners can cause your pores to overproduce oil—a natural defense mechanism when your glands feel too stripped of moisture—it’s safe to apply both morning and night, especially if you’re oily. “Use it directly after you cleanse your face, before any serums and treatment products, as a second defense against that dirt and grease,  If your skin is on the drier side, stick to using toner just at night,. By doing so, you’ll be removing any pore-clogging impurities that will further saturate your skin during your eight hours of snooze time and instead help your skin in its nightly renewal process.
The bottom line: The next time you’re wondering whether or not you really need to add another step to your skin-care routine, remember not to tune out toner. It eliminates dirt, grease, and grime to help clear your complexion and make the rest of your products work better.

Proper facial skin care requires regular cleansing and moisturizing. However, facial toners also play an important role in assuring you have a healthy and clean facial appearance. Whether you use a homemade toner such as rose water or lavender, or a brand-name toner sold in your local retailer's skin-care aisle, skin toner should be incorporated into your daily skin-care regimen -- applied with a cotton ball between cleansing and moisturizing.

    pH Balance

Facial toners help to balance the pH, or potential hydrogen, level of your skin. pH levels are an indication of the acidity level of your skin and are measured on a scale of 0 to 14, with 7 being the most neutral level. Having a balanced pH level means your skin is less prone to oiliness and infection, creating a more vibrant and smoother appearance.

    Detoxification

Many toxins that affect the health and appearance of your skin come from industrial-made chemicals. Facial toners work to remove environmental toxins such as smoke, smog and other chemical residues from your skin. This helps your skin to look brighter and healthier, and long-term benefits may include less acne, less severe acne scarring and fewer wrinkles.

    Acne Reduction

Acne can be painful and unsightly and can lead to facial scarring. It can also cause your skin to appear more oily, dull and unbalanced. By removing oily buildup, residue, and dead skin cells, facial toners assist in reducing the amount of facial blemishes and acne you may already have and work to prevent future breakouts.

    Hydration and Nourishment

Facial toners provide hydration to your skin, which is essential to maintaining elasticity, smoothness, moisture and a more youthful appearance. Proper skin hydration reduces the signs of aging skin and provides an effective base for the application of facial cosmetics. Many facial toners also provide vitamins and other essential skin nutrients to keep your skin healthy and balanced.

    Versatility

Facial toners can also be used for cleaning in and around your ears and for reducing oily deposits on your back, chest and arms, where acne also tends to form. Once you know what a great toner can do for your skin, and start using one, you'll be surprised at the remarkable benefits they provide
