In today’s world, many people are willing to try pretty much anything for smoother, younger-looking skin. Plastic surgery, non-surgical facelift, fractional laser resurfacing, botox, injectables, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, even snail slime and snake venom are said to improve skin's texture and appearance.
Add a new one to the list - micro-needling (also called derma-rolling). It’s been getting a lot of media and online attention these days.
he truth is…micro-needling has been around for a long time. Celebrities have been doing it to their skin for years and getting great results from it.
It is a form of collagen induction therapy, stimulating the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. Young skin has healthy amounts of collagen and elastin fibers, keeping it firm and supple. Physiological changes, environmental factors (especially sun exposure) and detrimental lifestyle choices (like smoking) all contribute to our skin’s loss of these supportive fibers as we age. With a reduction of collagen and elastin, we see sagging skin, wrinkles and enlarged pores.
Micro-needle rollers are fit with a rotating head lined with tiny acupuncture-type needles that delicately pierce the skin where the roller is rolled. With micro-needling, you divide your face into sections - forehead, right side, left side, chin and neck. With little pressure, you roll over each section 4-10 times, changing directions with each pass, up and down, back and forth and diagonally over each section, creating little tiny holes in the skin. After rolling, you then apply a serum and night cream to help fortify your skin’s protective barrier.
Roller Results
Medical professionals and advocates claim they firm the skin and diminish fine lines, wrinkles, even acne and post-surgery scarring by activating the skin's repairing and regeneration process. The tiny punctures from the needles signal to the body that the skin has been wounded. The body rushes collagen and elastin to that area to repair the skin, resulting in fewer wrinkles and healthier skin as collagen levels are boosted. Micro-needling encourages skincare treatments containing retinol, peptides and antioxidants to be absorbed deeply and penetrate better into the skin.
Many people feel compelled to use skin care products with ONLY organic and natural ingredients listed in them. This is understandable. Humans have created enough harmful chemicals to scare just about anyone. Plus, the media often hypes the dangers of common ingredients in skin care while keeping hush-hush on the extensive amount of effort that goes into producing safe and effective products.
